FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
JOINING

No Applications?
That's right! There are no formal applications at Cycle of Ages. We simply ask you to fill in any applicable information on the form here and post it in an unlocked post on your character's journal for reference purposes.

What am I allowed to play here?
Canon characters, CRAUs, Original Characters, and Fandom OCs are all acceptable.

Anything I can't play?
Yeah...we do not currently accept historical figures, real people, mythological people or creatures, human embodiments of countries or objects, or Fandom OCs who have any sort of relationship with established canon characters.

What's the character limit?
Right now, we're keeping it at 4 characters per player. This may change depending on activity levels, though.

Can I bring in a character who died in their canon?
Yes, and how you handle that is up to you. The only stipulation is that they would not be a ghost in game, even if they were in canon. You can have them come in just before the moment of their death, or have them come in completely alive and well. These character, however, would not be undead.

Do you accept multiples of characters?
To an extent. If an AU of a given character (CRAU, Fandom AU, or canon alternate version such as Marvel universes) is present in the game, anyone is welcome to bring in the Original Universe version of that character. Conversely, if the OU version is present in game, we ask that anyone thinking of bringing in an AU version of that character contact the OU player and get their permission, but we will only allow a maximum of two versions of any character in game at a time.

Can I transfer CR or Character Development from another game?
Yes, however, in the case of transferred Character Relationships, we ask that you contact the players of any characters your character may have known previously beforehand to get their permission and assure they're fine with your character's knowledge of theirs.

GAME MECHANICS

Do characters keep their powers?
Yes...to an extent. Characters will find their catastrophic abilities and complete invincibility isn't quite as catastrophic or invincible as it was before. For example, in canon, Superman is indestructible, can fly into outer space without needing to breath, is strong enough to move the Earth on its Axis while in orbit, and has laser beams that shoot from his eyes and can burn through literally anything. In Cycle of Ages, Superman would find that bullets do harm him, just significantly less than they harm a human, that his laser vision doesn't burn through just anything, that he can't leave the atmosphere or fly around the world without becoming exhausted, and can lift an overpass with great effort. Basically, we ask that you tone down abilities that could break the game setting!

What happens if my character dies?
Within minutes of death, the body will disappear without a trace, including scent. After a period of one week in game, they will reappear in the Receiving Room as they first showed up, with a minor change. Due to the nature of their return, they'll return missing something. This could be a memory, an ability or power, or even a sense such as vision or hearing and is up to the player's choice. It will return in time, and we ask that you contact a mod for a randomly generated length of time they'll be without whatever you've chosen! This length of time will be longer and longer the more times you die, so we recommend you be cautious. Death hurts, okay?

What if a character doesn't canonly speak English?
Mysteriously, everyone has the ability to speak English natively. By default, it's assumed that's what they're speaking. However, if a character has a canon knowledge of a language outside of whatever is commonly spoken in their universe, they can choose to speak it, and only other characters who canonly know that language will understand it.

My character needs ______ to survive. Anything I can do about that?
Characters will all come in with whatever items they had on them during the time of their transportation. If they need something else, unfortunately, there's no way for anyone to get it from home. That being said, some of the people in charge may be able to get something to replace it. All you need to do is ask! If whomever you choose to ask doesn't have an answer for you, they might be able to at least direct you to someone who does.

Can I update my character's canon point?
You most certainly can! Keep in mind, just like with death, if a character is being updated, they will disappear for one week in game and reappear at the Receiving Room platform. To submit a canon update, just go here!

POSTING

How do people communicate?
As part of a comfort package, all characters are provided with a smart phone that looks a lot like this. This phone, in addition to calendar, scheduler, email, and internet access (which is very limited in HQ as wifi has a lot of trouble working around all the magic), is capable of posting voice, text, and video posts to an internal site reserved only for residents of HQ.

Is it possible to destroy the phone?
There's nothing magically special about the phone, so yes. It's possible to destroy it or damage it. If you need another phone, your monthly allowance will be docked. If you don't have enough on your provided charge card to cover it, someone might require you to work it off. Either way, you should probably let someone know...

How exactly does posting to the network...work?
A lot like a post on dreamwidth, actually. You can use your provided phones to contact others on the same device network, like you would using a phone to call or text message someone. However, if you're posting something openly, viewable to everyone who has a device at the same time, it's posted in a community, forum-like place where anyone can see or reply to it, and can read any threads characters have with one another...that is unless your character has the technological know-how to code a post or reply to be private.

What do you mean when you say all posts need to be tagged?
We use your characters' tags to track activity during the bi-monthly check-in process! All we ask is, if you tag something or post something, put your tag on it!

SETTING AND MISCELLANEOUS

What is the ratio to in game and out of game time?
The ratio is 1:1.

Where to people live?
All new arrivals will be housed in the Dormitories!

Where does food come from?
Pretty mundane, but Gus actually orders his food from a delivery service, and he cooks it and feeds you with it.

Can I have my character open a business?
Yes! They can open businesses, but only outside of HQ, and in the city proper. If you'd like to start a business, fill in the form located here.

How does that charge card work exactly?
Originally, you'll be given $500 on that card to start. Every month, you'll have another $500 deposited on your provided charge card. If your character decides to take a job, they will receive pay regularly based on what they're doing in addition to their $500 monthly allowance.

Are there other NPCs?
There are several hundred people of various species who live at HQ. Most of them are open to be player-controlled unless there's an event going on, but we'll let you know if that happens.

What are the seasons like in Cycle?
The weather is the current forecast in New York City. The weather information can be found here. New York experiences fall, winter, spring and summer as well as the regular commercial holidays. Time Square around Christmas is something that everyone should see once.

ACTIVITY

So, there's no activity check, right? How does that work?
Bi-monthly, there will be an activity check-in posted to the OOC community. You'll have one week to reply to this just to let us know you're still interested in sticking around.

Hey! I checked in and I was still dropped. What gives?
After an activity check-in, if we determined you hadn't done anything those past two month aside from check-in, you'll receive a warning. If, after two more months, you don't actively participate, but check-in, you'll be auto-removed from the game.

HIATUS and DROPPING

So, what does it mean for my activity status if I hiatus?
If you hiatus for a month, you'll be fine through the next activity check-in, whether or not you do anything that activity check-in period.

If someone drops a character, can I pick them up?
Of course you can! Regardless of whatever relationships the previous player developed with the character, though, your character will have no memory of them.

ANYTHING ELSE?

If you have a question that wasn't answered above, please ask below! We'll get to it as quickly as we can!
